Text Formatting Rules
Before you begin
Please notice that topics are in alphabetical order. Most topics have three sections:
- Numbered steps to complete the task.
- An example of how it will look while editing a page.
- The final appearance once the page is saved.
Bold
- Place a plus sign (+) immediately before the word or phrase to be bolded.
- Type the word or words.
- Type another plus sign (+) immediately after the word or phrase.
Example: \+phrase to be bolded+

Create a New Page
- Create a link to the new page first by typing the name of the new page. The name should be the WordsSmashedTogether? with each word starting with a capital letter. (See "Links (to other pages within the same website)" in this document for more information.
- Save the page. (There will be a question mark (?) immediately following the link name.)
- Click on the newly created link and a new, blank web page will appear.
Headings
- Place a blank line above the heading.
- Type an equals sign (=) immediately before the heading.
- Place a blank line below the heading.

Note: There must be a blank line above and below the heading. The heading will automatically be bolded.
Images (general)
- Type an open sqaure bracket ( [ ).
- Type the image title if there is one.
- Type a colon.
- Type the url or path to the image.
- If the image is to be aligned, add a colon and the word left, right or center.
- Type a close square backet ( ] ).
Example: \[:/photo/me/stilllife.jpg:right] or \[caption:/photo/me/stilllife.jpg]
Italic
- Place a slash (/) immediately before the word or phrase to be italicized.
- Type the word or words.
- Type another slash (/) immediately after the word or phrase.
Example: \/phrase to be italicized/
Final appearance:
/phrase to be italicized/
Line (aka Seperator)
- Type at least four dashes (-).
Links (to an email address)
- Type the complete email address anywhere in the text.
Example: caleb@chiefworks.com
Links (to other pages within the same website)
- Type the name of the page. The name should be the WordsSmashedTogether? with each word starting with a capital letter.
Example: SmashedWordsTogether?.
Note: If the page has not been previously created, there will be a question mark (?) immediately following the link name once the page is saved. See "Create a New Web Page" heading in this document for more information.
Note: On most sites, any phrase can be a wiki link simply by enclosing it in square brackets. Useing a capital leter to start the link is recommended.
Example: \[Jeeping in Colorado]
Links (to other websites)
- Type +http://+ followed by the complete website address.
Example: http://caleb.alerque.com
Note: A word can be used as a link to make the text easier to read. For example to use the word google as the link
instead of http://google.com type the following in the paragraph:
\[google|http://google.com]
Lists (bulleted)
- Place a blank line above the list.
- Type an asterisk (*) at the beginning of each line in the list.
- Place a blank line below the list.
Example:

- first item in the bulleted list
- second item in the bulleted list
Lists (multi-level)
- Place a blank line above the list.
- Type one asterisk (*) at the beginning of each line to be the first level in the list.
- Type two asterisks (**) at the beginning of each line to be the second level in the list.
- Place a blank line below the list.
Example:

- Item at first level in the bulleted list
- First item at the second level in the bulleted list
- Second item at the second level in the bulleted list
Note: It is possible to use both bullets and numbers in multi-level lists.
Lists (numbered)
- Place a blank line above the list.
- Type a pound symbol (#) at the beginning of each line in the list.
- Place a blank line below the list.
Example:
Final appearance:
- first item in the numbered list
- second item in the numbered list
Paragraphs
- Place a blank line above the paragraph.
- Type the paragraph (it does not matter if it is less than one line or multiple lines).
- Place a blank line below the paragraph.
Paragraphs (indented quote blocks)
- Place a blank line above the paragraph.
- Type a greater-than symbol (>) at the beginning of the paragraph.
- Place a blank line below the paragraph.

The text of the paragraph to be indented.
Preformatted text
Preformatted text such as code may be entered by starting each line with a single space.
Underline
- Place an underline (_) immediately before the word or phrase to be underlined.
- Type the word or words.
- Type another undersline (_) immediately after the word or phrase.
Example: \_phrase to be underlined_
Final appearance: _phrase to be underlined_
